What to Do Before Sending Your Apple Mac for Repair

Apple MacBooks are the perfect device for those looking for work and play. With some great features that blend Apple’s iconic sleekness with innovative features. But, that does not make it invincible.

Here at the Techout, we provide mac repairs in Barnstaple and servicing at an affordable price. However, before you send your MacBook for repair, we can offer some great tips to ensure that a repair is the last option.

Identify the MacBook's Issue

The first step is to identify the exact issue that your MacBook is experiencing to fix it. In some cases, a MacBook’s problem can be challenging to determine. If it won’t turn on or is entirely unresponsive, you might need to look for a local MacBook repair service.

Here are a couple of ways to identify the issues:

  • Read error messages
  • Document when the problem began
  • Check software
  • Check disc space
  • Check storage

Once the issue is identified, we can offer the best advice to fix your problem.

Mac is Slow or Delayed

If your Mac is unresponsive or struggling to perform efficiently, you might have an issue with your memory usage. Sometimes specific programs dominate your MacBook’s memory and cause the CPU to go into overload, slowing your Mac down.

How to Fix a Slow MacBook

We recommend checking the Activity monitor (cmd + space and type Activity Monitor) and heading over to memory. This service will tell you what exact app or program is heavily using the MacBooks memory and thus tell you what is causing your MacBook to be slow. Update this app or program or simply delete it to make room for other apps and programs.

If you are still having issues with a slow or sluggish mac laptop, it would be beneficial to take your MacBook in for servicing and a health check, as your mac may need a memory upgrade.

MacBook Power Problems

If you have issues with your MacBook’s power capabilities, you might have an issue with your battery or charging cable. We recommend checking your battery icon to see if specific applications are causing your battery to drain faster. However, if the Mac is noticeably draining faster than the average MacBook, you might need a battery replacement. Additionally, if you click on the battery icon, the device will tell you if the battery requires servicing.

How to Fix a Mac Failing to Charge

Chargers are very delicate pieces of technology that are often mistreated. So if your Mac is failing to charge, this might be an issue with your charger rather than the MacBook itself. The first step is to use a different power cable that’s proven to work or try your charger on another Mac. We also recommend checking that the cable being used is the correct ratings for the MacBook itself. If this doesn’t work out, then at least you’ve ruled out this possibility.

If all else fails, you might need to reset your SMC (System Management Controller), shut down the Mac, press and hold shift, control and option with the power button. Wait for 10 seconds and release. Turn on the Mac, and the SMC should be reset. However, this process is for MacBooks and may change depending on if your Mac has an Apple T2 security chip. Make sure that you identify this and follow the steps accordingly.
